'Tis
the season to be jolly ... ho, ho, ho. The mechanical
Santas and the shopping malls are all ringing out with
good cheer. But what do you feel like inside? Is there
laughter there?
Not
the laughter that comes from the bottom of a bottle
at Christmas (go on, have fun but don't drive, please).
I mean the laughter that is in your soul, in your bones.
Laughter
is the essence of life. Next to breathing, it's the
best thing you can do to keep yourself happy and healthy.
A
good sense of humour and a hearty laugh every day have
even better benefits than an apple a day to keep the
doctor away! And don't forget to laugh at yourself.
This whole journey is a game, so stop taking yourself
so seriously.
First
and foremost, laughter relieves stress. When your mind
is focused on something funny, it's not focused on those
things you call "problems". Since stress causes
most health issues, daily laughter keeps stress from
building up to unhealthy levels.
Laughter
causes the mind to produce endorphins that promote a
feeling of well-being. It's no secret that people with
a good sense of humour live happier, healthier, and
longer lives.
If
you are feeling down or overwhelmed, lose yourself in
a funny movie or play entertaining games. After having
fun, you'll feel rejuvenated and get back on track with
what you need to do.
If
you are involved in a tense situation with someone,
stop taking it like you have to win World War III -
think of something funny to break the tension. If you
can laugh together, you can settle your differences
amicably and find a win-win solution.
Laughter
also sends extra oxygen to the brain that aids in clarity
which ain't a bad ailment to live with.
Today,
set yourself the goal to find humor in your everyday
routines so you can rejuvenate your body, mind, and
spirit! And laugh at yourself!
Self-Reflection
Questions:
1. What gave you your
biggest laughs today? How did you feel afterwards?
2.
How can you bring more humour into your daily life?
3.
If a comedian looked at your life, would you object
to him laughing at your sometimes ridiculous actions
and comments? Or would you laugh with them?
