As we were watching Louise Hay's DVD "You Can Heal Your Life" the other night, it struck me that the reason many people are ill is that they've lost connection with their true self. They're trying to be something that they think they should be and are disappointed when they judge themselves to be imperfect.

And they suppress that feeling of imperfection into their body.

You don't have to be some distant concept of "perfect" - just real. The truth is you are perfect just as you are. Yes, there are things that you might improve upon but that doesn't make you any less of a worthwhile person today.

With each step you take in life, you are learning and growing, but you don't have to be "perfect" (what does that mean anyway?). Have you noticed that life moves the goal posts? As soon as you achieve one goal, your mind creates another loftier goal. That's why you should look at achieving goals not perfection.

If you know that most of the time, you do your best, that is perfection in itself. Realise that making mistakes is a natural part of being human. Instead of beating yourself up about being human, live in the moment. What we have now is the present. This moment is what is real and you are a part of it - relish its possibilities.

Throw off the trappings of trying to exhibit "perfection". I don't care if you're not "perfect" and I doubt anyone else does either. So why are you playing that game against yourself?

Self-Reflection Questions:
1. In what ways do you strive for perfection?

2. Are you happy with yourself NOW?

3. Do you stress out about the past or future, or do you enjoy the reality of living in the moment?

Learn from others' experience ....
The thing that is really hard, and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself.
~ Anna Quindlen

People throw away what they could have by insisting on perfection, which they cannot have, and looking for it where they will never find it.
